“Intentions have a lot of power. Because once you set an intention... you automatically start to create a direction. It’s like a starting point. It’s like a map. Your actions will follow and fall in place much more easily.”
— Julie Greenham
This is the final episode of 2021 — so it’s time to talk about your New Year’s resolutions for 2022.
My advice? Don’t make any. Yes, I’m serious!
I don’t believe in setting resolutions because, for most people, they tend to take the form of radical, unrealistic goals that require a drastic change to their routine or lifestyle.
These types of resolutions can feel really good at the moment that you set them — after all, they feel like the first step to creating a magical new life where you go to the gym every day, triple your monthly revenue, or cook complicated meals from scratch every night, for example.
Of course, these goals sound wonderful. But because they are so unrealistic, setting them means setting yourself up for failure.
Since resolutions often involve all-or-nothing thinking, it’s too tempting to just give up completely when you start to fall short — when you miss the gym two days in a row because life gets in the way or when you’re too tired after a long day to make that béchamel sauce!
This year, instead of setting resolutions, I want you to set intentions.
Intentions are driven by desire, rather than obligation... and they’re far more forgiving when it comes to taking your goals one day at a time. Setting an intention creates a starting point and gently points you in the right direction, allowing aligned actions to fall in place more easily.
Rather than “I must” or “I will,” think in terms of “I would like,” and embrace small steps that add up sustainable change.
And remember — you can set intentions whenever you like. If you find that an intention you set on New Year’s Eve no longer serves you, just replace it with one that will!
