Show Notes

“Creativity is really broad, it’s not that you have to be able to paint or draw. I think everybody has creativity in them in some form. It might be in baking, it might be in gardening, it might be in sewing or knitting.”

—  Lorraine Thomson

Do you consider yourself creative?

While many people may answer “no,” creativity can mean many different things! And there can be no telling where your creative journey can take you.

My guest for this episode is Lorraine Thomson, who always knew that she wanted to be an artist... even as she set it aside to pursue a career in nursing.

10 years into her career as a nurse-practitioner, the urge to create became too overwhelming. Lorraine left her job and returned to school, where she earned a degree in Fine Arts from Western University.

Lorraine now works full-time as an artist, creating and teaching others how to create through the Zentangle Method, a relaxed way of drawing using structured patterns. She also creates art through working with acrylics, collage, and sculpture.

“For me, it’s a way of helping process emotions, in some ways. Sometimes, it’s very directed at something I’ve been worrying about or something in the news,” Lorraine says. “It’s just a way of tapping into some other parts of your brain.”

Although many of us mistakenly believe that you can’t make a living as an artist, Lorraine is here to prove that following your creative passions doesn’t mean you’ll wind up “starving”!

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • How getting into a flow state calms our nervous systems and triggers powerful creativity
  • The ways that art can be used to help process emotions or keep you grounded
  • How working with your non-dominant hand can help you tap into different parts of your brain or release tension

About Lorraine Thomson: Lorraine Thomson is a former nurse-practitioner turned artist, now following her passions. She became a certified Zentangle teacher and has been teaching classes in person and online since then.
